Here's one of the secrets of life and one of the methods of coaching: If you don't like the way it is, change your mind. The underlying truth of that statement is, that how we respond to the circumstances of our lives is far more important than the circumstances. Said another way, you and I have the power to cause our own lives. Actually, we do cause our lives, but we are mostly unaware of it. All well and good as an epigram, but how do we go about doing it? Well, that is the trick, isn't it? Let's start with one of the first elements of coaching: Transform unwanted circumstances into desired goals. So: "My wife doesn't understand me" can become, "My goal is for my relationship to recover that honeymooning feeling." "My job is boring" can become, "My goal is to be excited at work" "Debts are killing me" can become, "My goal is to save $1,000/month"You should also note that this is consistent with The Law of Attraction - Actually it shifts your thinking to become consistent with attracting the desired result instead of complaining about not having it.People have cynically said, "there are no problems, there are only opportunities" for many years. Coaching makes it so.tice the essential shift in each of those statements is from being a victim of the circumstances to mastering the circumstances. Changing your mind immediately results in changing your conversation. It changes who you talk to and what you talk about. Who do you talk to about your boring job and what do you say? Not the same people or conversation about being excited at work. You would never talk to management about your boredom, but you would talk to them about generating challenge and growth. You couldn't talk to subordinates about boredom, but you certainly could about generating excitement. The progression is simple. Changing your mind causes changing conversations. And this results in changing actions. And - either right away or in a while - this results in the circumstance 'magically' becoming favorable. As long as I'm spilling essential truths, I'll give you another one. This is both a spiritual truth and one of the secrets of relationships. And it goes hand in glove with the first secret. "You cannot tell a book by its cover." Worth pondering.Michael Lipp, The Contribution Coach guides people to having what they want in their relationships, their work and their lives. He is also a multi-faceted author - His books include, "Less Stress, More Wealth" and "Guide to a Fulfilled Life".
